Jenny Shires Room 16
Kia Ora and welcome to Room 16, Tui Syndicate. This is the beginning of an exciting journey for the students as they progress through their time at Birkdale Intermediate. I am really looking forward to building a great learning relationship with the students and their whanau and creating a positive learning environment within our classroom. I encourage students to take on the responsibility for their learning and give things a go. There is much on offer at Birkdale, so I would encourage students to challenge themselves and try things they haven’t yet experienced. Homework is given to reinforce our learning, so support your child by signing off their homework diary at the end of each week. I encourage an open relationship within our classroom and home, so email me if you have any queries or visit the room outside of class hours.
Our year kicks off with our first exciting Quest “Let the Buyer Beware”. Quests give real life scenarios that takes the students on a journey of learning discovery and intrigue. This Quest will have us investigating the geology of the foreshore around Takapuna and include an interesting field trip to examine the geology first hand.
Maths begins with Number & Algebra, focusing of addition and subtraction. Our literacy program will commence with poems from New Zealand Authors. Here students will focus on applying the Three Level Guide to analyse them.
Will we be prepared for when “Disaster Strikes”? Our second Quest challenges our thoughts on what we consider as priorities in times of natural disasters. Literacy will move into Myths from around the world. Students reports are sent home towards the end of term, followed up by the Parent Teacher Interviews. Maths will focus on multiplication and division, finishing with Statistics and graphing.
Term three is packed with action. The school production is a major yearly event, so I would encourage students to become involved and give it a go. Get your sporting spirit ready for our 3rd Quest “Faster, Higher, Stronger”- can we live up to the true spirit of sportsmanship? Keeping this spirit alive, we conclude the term with Cross country. Maths will begin with Number and Algebra Unit 3, moving into Geometry and Measurement towards the end of term.
Our final quest sees Filemoni having to make a decision of whether his family should immigrate to New Zealand from Samoa. What do our students think he should do – and why? (Interesting dilemma). Maths will move into Unit 4 of Number and Algebra, followed with Geometry and Measurement Unit 3. Final reports are sent out towards the end of term.
You can keep up to date with all the activities, news and our students successes through our weekly school newsletter, Birkdale Bulletin, which goes home every Friday.
