Room 17

Kali Creek Room 17

Welcome to Room 17!

I am very happy to be continuing my journey here at Birkdale Intermediate as a part of Tui Team. This year I will be teaching Year 7 in Room 17, and I look forward to getting to know all the amazing new students who be joining us at this fantastic school.

I strongly encourage parents to take an interest in their students’ learning. I ask that parents monitor assigned homework tasks (approximately 4 hours per week), assist with spelling, and sign the students’ homework every week. I would also like to welcome all parents to contact me for a chat, visit the room (outside of class hours), and see what their students get up to in room 17.

Ongoing – This year in Maths we will be focusing on Number & Algebra, Geometry & Measurement, and Statistics. In English, we will be introducing the 3-Level Guide and using this tool throughout the year. Over the course of this year the students will be embarking on several “Quests”. Each Quest is linked to Science or the Social Sciences and they are designed to teach and improve thinking skills. Fitness, Health, and P.E. are also an important part of every student’s life, and these take place regularly throughout the year.

Term 1 – The first term is action-packed and full of activities for the new Year 7’s. The Quest for this term is ‘Let the Buyer Beware’ and as part of this quest we have planned a field trip to Takapuna Beach to explore the geology of the area. In English we will be focusing on Poetry, as well as the creation of a ‘Me Magazine’. PAT testing will also take place during this term, and a ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening will be held. In addition to all this, we have the Shore-to-Shore Fun Run, 40hr Famine, and Top Team during this term. What a way to start the year!

Term 2 – In the second term we will continue focusing on thinking skills with two new Quests, ‘Disaster Strikes!’ and ‘Science Fair. The Science Fair Quest is an exploration of fair testing which culminates in a school wide Science Fair to share students’ results with the whole school. In English we will be focusing on Mythology and crafting our own myths. At the end of this term, the first written academic reports will be sent home and will be followed by Student/Parent/Teacher conferencing.

Term 3 – Lights, Camera, Action! Birkdale Intermediate is known for the fantastic productions it puts on, and students will have the opportunity to get involved in the school production in a number of different ways. The Quest for the third term is ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’ where students explore the real meaning of sportsmanship. In English we will be engaging in a novel study. In P.E. we will start training for the upcoming Athletics Day in term 4. The Cross-country Run also takes place during this term, where we will have the opportunity to share our true sportsmanship.

Term 4 – The last term is sure to fly by, and no doubt Room 17 will be dreaming of lazy summer days, but first we have some work to do. Our final Quest is ‘Filemoni’s Dilemma’. Biographies are the focus for our final term in English, as well as how we determine who is heroic or villainous. In P.E. we will continue improving our fitness levels and will participate in the annual Athletics Day. We can also look forward to a great time at EOTC. Towards the end of this term the final Written Academic Report will be sent home.
