Principal’s Welcome

Welcome to Birkdale Intermediate School. Our vision is to provide a quality education in a caring environment. We are a school committed to both academic and personal development. We balance academic work with a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities to develop confident strong young people ready to contribute to society. Our priority is the stimulation of independent enquiry and intellectual curiosity.

Teachers at Birkdale Intermediate are dedicated and work hard to provide a balanced, challenging programme that encourages academic excellence. Staff are keen to participate in ongoing programmes of professional development to enhance their teaching abilities and skills.

All academic programmes are well planned and the school is continuing to develop ways to ensure that accelerate students and the special needs of children are catered for in order the each child’s potential is realised. An increasing emphasis is being placed on literacy, numeracy, science and technology, and the school aims to prepare each student for success as life time learners.

We focus on the key competencies from the New Zealand Curriculum. These include thinking, using language, symbols, and text, managing self, relating to others and participating and contributing. The development of thinking skills is a feature of our programmes. We have a high speed computer network with easy access to desktop computers and iPads that allows our students to look outward to the wider connected World.

In addition to quality academic programmes, we foster good sportsmanship, and encourage an enjoyment of recreational and sporting activities. These include cricket, swimming, waterpolo, softball, rugby union, rugby league, basketball, netball, soccer, orienteering, athletics, hockey and volleyball. The school prides itself on being a “Fair Play School”.

Arts and culture are catered for in a range of activities a s diverse as choir, band, drama, music tuition, Kapa Haka and a range of performing arts which includes our highly acclaimed dance programme. The school is well known for its major productions of shows such as Joseph, Windust, and Bugsy Malone. These involve large numbers of students each year.

We also have a challenging outdoor education programme that includes a wide variety of activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking, and archery.

The school has the interest of each child at heart. It is our objective to encourage each individual to make the most of the innovative programmes the school offers. We encourage parental involvement and support, and look forward to playing our part in assisting in the development of caring, considerate and focused members of our society. We are a “Health Promoting, School” and are keen to have support from the whole community in promoting our children’s sense of well being.

The school will continue to provide a quality education for students while introducing a number of new initiatives in the coming year, keeping the school at the forefront of curriculum developments.

The staff, parents and students are proud of the excellent reputation Birkdale Intermediate School has earned. Reports from the Education Review Office have been supportive of the quality and variety of the school’s programmes. Birkdale Intermediate is held in high regard for the way in which it endeavors to provide each child with the opportunity to develop to his or her potential.
