We are aware that some schools across the region may have to change their start dates due to health and safety concerns, however, we have assessed our situation thoroughly and at this stage, we will be welcoming our students on Thursday 2nd as planned.

A message from The Board of Birkdale Intermediate SchoolFri Jan 20 12:57pm
Ngā mihi o te tau hou ki a koutou katoa,
Following the resignation of our much-loved Principal JoAnne Sutton, the Board will be
commencing a collaborative recruitment campaign to appoint a permanent Principal for
Birkdale Intermediate School.
In the interim, the Board has completed an expression of interest process for the role of
Acting Principal. We were very fortunate to have experienced staff to consider for this role.
We are pleased to announce that the Board has opted for a co-leadership arrangement, with
Mel Robinson and Katrina Bush being appointed as Acting Principals for Birkdale
For the past five years, Mel and Katrina have been instrumental deputy leaders supporting
JoAnne, the wider staff and community. Mel and Katrina work extremely well collaboratively
and bring many skills, experience, and knowledge of the school to the table. We are
confident that they have the leadership skills to support BIS through this transition phase.
It was crucial to the Board to ensure that the school has stability and continuity during this
time. We want to assure you that your tamariki will continue to receive a quality education in
a caring environment.
The management team will be in touch in due course to update you on the term ahead. In
addition, we are conscious this change will mean a change to Whaea Mel’s whanau class,
and the team will be in touch with those whanau directly to discuss the plan for the term.
Thank you for your support and patience through this process.
We look forward to welcoming your tamariki back to school on the 2nd of February.
Noho ora mai,
Rebecca (Presiding Member); Hone; Jenny; Lleuarne; Michelle and Shannon
A message from The Board of Birkdale Intermediate SchoolThu Dec 22 09:56am
Tēnā koutou te hāpori ō BIS,
As many of you will be aware, our principal JoAnne Sutton has tendered her resignation, and will leave Birkdale Intermediate School at the start of the 2023 year to pursue other interests.
JoAnne has been the heart of the school over her nearly 5 years as Principal. She has supported a learning environment in which our tamariki have had the opportunity to find and build their own strengths, to raise their achievements and to further their enjoyment of learning. She has provided a plethora of extra-curricular activities and opportunities to explore and cater to our diverse learners.
JoAnne has driven instrumental change for our school.
Imploring the Ministry of Education to support a revamp of multiple school buildings and facilities; re-designing and repurposing many of the external areas and gardens; and introducing subject based learning as a means of providing the best possible learning style for our students. These are but a few of the amazing outcomes she has achieved with absolute success in her time at BIS.
In early 2023, the Board will commence a recruitment process, and will ensure a rigorous selection process that draws upon engagement from our community, to secure a talented leader who can not only build on JoAnne’s legacy but guide the school through the next stage of its development. We will provide a further update once the recruitment process is more advanced.
Please take this opportunity to join us in thanking JoAnne for her significant contribution to our school.
Have a safe Christmas and we will see you in the new year.

Whānau Classes this WeekSun Nov 27 05:55pm
Kia ora e te whānau,
We have several staff away this week due to illness including covid. We have decided to have a week of whānau class learning to ensure that all students have consistency with teachers and learning this week. It has not been possible to find relief teachers to cover classes for the entire week.
For most classes, they will have their own whānau teacher for the week. However, there are some changes that have made to ensure that students have one teacher for the week rather than a series of different relievers.
We have also decided not to cancel the art and hard technology programmes as many students have projects that need to be completed this week.
Whānau 6 will have Miss Dooley for the week.
Whānau 11 and 12 will be together with Whaea Tui and Whaea Journey
Whānau 17 will have Mrs Hedges for the week
Whānau 19 is being split across the school and students will stay with a given whānau class for the week. They will have art and hard tech at their usual times.
We have made these arrangements to ensure students have a known teacher for the week. A school wide learning programme has been devised to ensure consistency of learning and subject coverage. We will have relief teachers in during the week as well.
On Wednesday afternoon we will have a school wide focus on preparing for EOTC and Camp week.
Fingers crossed that the weather improves and that everyone who is unwell is able to rest and recover.
Ngā mihi nui,
