Home Learning to Continue

Wed Jul 06 12:43pm

Kia ora e te whānau,

Thank you for your support of our decision to revert to home learning. We have tried to plan an onsite programme with limited qualified staff but we are unable to make that
happen in a way that is conducive to learning and with adequate supervision.
There will be no onsite learning for the remainder of the week. We have not made this decision lightly and have consulted with MOE and our Board. We have had to consider what is in the best interests of health and safety for all.
We have teachers, office staff and support staff all unwell. Our leadership team is also unwell and cannot be onsite. Those who are well are in the minority and cannot cover unknown numbers of students.
I am aware that some of you will be upset by this decision. If we could have come up with a different solution, we would have done that. However, we are constantly reminding our
students about ethic of care and to have students onsite with limited supervision and with unknown numbers of covid in the community, we would not be showing care for all.
I am hopeful that those of you who are unable to take time off work are able to find others who can assist with child minding. More slides were added to the home learning file
today. These are at a lower level to ensure they can be done without parental input.
Reports will be ready to be sent home on Friday. Reports can be picked up between 12 – 3pm on Friday from the school library. These may not all have been signed by the teacher
but they are all available to be handed out. The report will also have details on how to book an appointment for the parent and teacher conferences next term.

ShowQuest is definitely still on this Wednesday. Sports will continue all week. If your child
needs to pick up any personal belongings from school, please email kbush@bis.school.nz so that Mrs Bush can let you know when would be a suitable time to pick up belongings.
Once again, we are grateful for your support and acknowledge that this is difficult for many families to juggle. I hope
that you are well and that you enjoy the school holiday period. We look forward to a term of wellness beginning on
Monday 25 July.

Continued Home Learning for TOMORROW

Mon Jul 04 03:38pm

Monday 4 July  2022

Kia ora e te whānau,

Thank you for your support of our decision to revert to home learning last week.  Unfortunately, we do have to continue this tomorrow as we do not have enough staff to be onsite.

Currently, 9 staff are affected by covid 19 and a further 6 staff are too unwell to return tomorrow.  We cannot cover classes or provide adequate supervision with these numbers.

If your child has not had covid in the last 3 months and is showing any symptoms, please do a test and if positive, they should isolate for 7 days.  The current numbers of those affected are quite alarming and we want to stop the spread.

A decision about what we do for the remainder of the week is currently being made in consultation with our advisor from the Ministry of Education and the Presiding Member of our Board.

I am keen to give parents as much notice as possible if we are unable to return onsite.  I am very aware of how difficult these decisions are for working parents.  As we are not in lockdown, your child does not have to remain at home while we are offsite so now might be a good time to look into some options for supervision if we do continue to learn from home for the rest of this week.

Events such as ShowQuest and weekly sports will continue as planned.

The link for home learning is below.  Teachers who are well may be emailing students today or tomorrow but we are asking you to continue to encourage students to self manage their learning while teaching staff are unavailable.  There are a lot of resources and a variety of activities available for students to engage with.

Cross Country/Fun Run Postponed

Mon Jul 04 10:06am

Due to illness and keeping everyone healthy we will be postponing the fun run/cross country until Tuesday 2nd August. (T3 wk2).

Important! Reverting to Home Learning from TOMORROW

Wed Jun 29 03:08pm

We have numerous staff and students away today and have several confirmed cases of covid 19.  We also have a large number of people with gastro stomach bugs and flu like illnesses.  We have tried to manage this by doubling up classes, increasing cleaning, social distancing and encouraging mask wearing.  However, the daily number of unwell people is increasing.

After consultation with our Board and the Ministry of Education we have decided to revert to home learning to allow for a deep clean of the school and wellness for all.  This means that there will be no on-site learning.  At this stage, our plan is to remain off site tomorrow, Friday and Monday.  We will review our decision on Monday at 3pm and advise via email and the school app as to whether we will continue online or onsite.

Outside events such as netball, basketball and waterpolo will still be on unless otherwise advised and students should attend if they are well.  If your child will not be attending, please let the coaches and managers know.

The link for the home learning has been shared with all teachers who will share it with students.  The link is also at the bottom of this letter and has been emailed to you.  Due to staff shortages, there is no provision for zoom meetings.  The home learning is self-directed.  Our focus is on well being and getting the school clean and ready for a return to onsite learning.

To help us to make a decision about returning to onsite learning, we need to know numbers of students who are confirmed covid cases or in isolation.  Please email the school office to let us know if your child remains too unwell to return to school next week.

Tuesday 5 July is the scheduled date for our school cross country.  We will confirm whether this is on via email or the school app.

I am very aware that having students at home poses numerous problems for working parents.  We have considered other options but after discussions with the Ministry of Education, we have decided  to prioritise the wellness of staff and students and to ensure the school can be deep cleaned without people onsite.

Students will be told about the online learning programme this afternoon.  Those who have indicated they do not have access to a digital device will be given a paper copy of resources.

I am hopeful that this return to off-site learning will break the cycle of illness and allow staff and students time to recover fully.  Thank you for your understanding and support of this.  Please stay well.

Kind regards,

JoAnne Sutton
